Snapping Turtles As Pets

There are many different types of turtles around these days, many of which are fascinating and make great pets for those who want a pet that is unique. Snapping turtles are one of the variations around the turtles and the freshwater turtles can often be found being offered for sale as small pups that look sweet and fascinating. There are two kinds of snapping turtles, including the Joint Alligator Snapper and Snapper.

Anyone that thinks that a snapping turtle as a pet will need to learn more about these creatures and carefully consider whether this is the right choice for a pet turtle. As is the case with all turtles, snapping turtles will have to be properly looked to be healthy and happy. It may take more work than many people predicted, with many rushing to having snapping turtles as pets without really considering what goes into keeping these creatures as pets.

Although they May be small when you buy these turtles can become very large. In fact, they can grow to adult shell length of more than two feet and be far more than a dozen stone! So do not expect your hatchling to stay small and cute long as they could soon become large and you will be able to accommodate them in a suitable environment.

Another thing to remember is that these creatures lived about twenty years in captivity, so if you decide you have a snapping turtle pet for a very long time. This is great in terms of having a pet than longevity, but it also means that you must be providing care for their turtles for about two decades, if properly taken care of.

These turtles are not generally recommended as the first turtle for someone with no experience in looking after these sorts of creatures. They are geared more towards those who have experience in maintenance and care of turtles.

There is a reason why these turtles have names snapping turtle. As they grow they develop a very large jaws and can be very aggressive, which is another reason why they are best suited to more experienced than for families who want to get the first turtle to satisfy the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle fan in the house!

These are all things you need to consider if you're looking into getting a snapper turtle as a pet. Taking factors such as their size as they get older, their aggressiveness, their needs, and your commitment needed to consider to help you more informed decision regarding whether to choose the snapper.
